It’s an incredible story! I have known Trong for fifty years, but never knew about his hardships until I read his memoir. This book is an excellent read for anyone looking for inspiration. I highly recommend it.

I have known Trong for five decades, but I only learned about the suffering he endured during the war in Vietnam after reading his incredible memoir. The book provides a fascinating look into Trong’s adventurous life. It is filled with action and serves as an inspiration. I highly recommend this memoir to anyone who wants to learn more about his experiences.

Excellent story! I literally could not put the book down. As an educator, this should be a class read aloud.

HEIDI IVERSON –
Whether he was building a cart, tinkering with cars, or winning a shark-catching tournament, Trong always applied himself with an abundance of energy. It seemed that the entire room would light up when he walked in. His life has seen many challenges – from poverty and mistreatment to war, to escape, to finding friends and family, through serious illnesses, and then to financial success. I always thought he would do well, and wish him much success with this book, which captures many of his trials and adventures.
Rob Imobersteg –

Wow… reading your story hit us hard — in the best way. We knew some of what you went through, but seeing it all laid out like that… it was overwhelming in the most powerful way.
We had no idea how much you were carrying back then. The strength it took to keep going, to stay hopeful, to just keep showing up — it’s honestly incredible. You’ve been through more than most people could imagine, and you still came out with love, faith, and light in your heart.
We truly believe God was with you the whole time. There’s no other way to explain how you made it through everything and became the person you are today.
Tim Olivas –
This is a must read if you believe in perseverance, courage and faith. This is a story of true grit, determination, and friendship that knows no boundaries. It will keep you captivated from beginning to end.
Robert Roberto –
This story of courage and faith through his remarkable journey as a child and growing up in a state of war all around him.
Torn away from his family he adapts to survive. Blessings to all the families that impacted Troung’s journey, he is forever grateful!
God truly has the plan, despite all the pain and suffering in our lives, God is merciful! Troung’s faith has triumph through the hardships
and success, now he is giving back to the families and his faith in the Catholic Church. Very blessed to be his brother in Christ !

It’s been a long time since I picked up a book and read it from start to finish within a day, and that’s what I did when I read “Of Good Courage.” It’s for good reason that I say that trying to describe how moving it is feels like a tall order.
In “Of Good Courage,” Mr. Cao makes so much of the emotional impact possible with his unflinching authenticity, honesty, and humility in recalling his harrowing life’s journey from life during the Vietnam War to life in America, as well as his walk with God through a broken world and his conversion of heart to one of a devoted Catholic. His testimony throughout the book reads as though I was directly across from him and listening to him speak about everything he went through in his life, and it’s a factor that really helps make this book memorable.
Mr. Gorans’s own decades-long quest to find Mr. Cao is told just as earnestly, and it effectively emphasizes the fact that God not only stays with us through our troubles, but also works actively to show it, even if we might not necessarily see what He has in mind at first.
I recommend this book if you’re looking for literature about people who look to God for help when nothing seems to be working out for them, as “Of Good Courage” is truly one of a kind.

I just want to say thank you to this wonderful human being Trong, he is such a kinds hearted, sweet, caring and supportive especially with children. I reached out to him about my child slowly losing his faith in God and Trong connects with me in a heartbeat. We talked close to two hours about my child problems. I can tell you, he is a good listener and very careful with his words. He shared his experiences… I’m very touched with all of his kind words.

This is an amazing true life story of a true native Vietnamese who did not look like one or act like one. Severely mistreated as a child, abused as an adolescent due to his short height, taken advantage of by selfish women who never really cared inspite of his kindness to them and their children whom they already had even before they got married to him. His various and unique personal misadventures took a toll on his physical health, his emotional and psychological needs, and most of all his deeply spiritual Cathoic background, The horrors of the Vietnam war, with all its violence and blood-thirsty abuse of freedom specially of women and children. left him scarred for life along with countless Vietnamese people. Fortunately for Trong his deep spiritual devotion brought him back to his senses and led him from a life of deprivation and deep depression to one living the very life that Jesus shared with his chosen apostles and disciples. Truly an apostle of the modern times in the mold of the original twelve, Trong stands out in his witnessing to people of every walk of life who are lucky to cross his path and experience the love, compassion and kindness that they feel as he has always been guided since childhood to his faith in His Lord who has guided him through all his unbelievable trials and tribulations. A true son of Vietnam, and the gift of his wonderful people to the entire world. I am a Filipino and I feel lucky to have somebody like Trong step on Philippine soil even for a short while. I know that many of my own countrymen will learn from the extraordinary kindness and compassion of this man who is teaching the world through his experiences what the real treasures in life are.

This is the amazing and inspiring life story of Trong Van Cao, a true native Vietnamese who did not look like one, or act like one. Severely mistreated as a young boy, abused no end as an adolescent at every turn and corner because he was short, taken advantage of by a couple of foreign women who took advantage of his kindness. He who loved unselfishly by agreeing to marriage with them and love them unconditionally, he who did not have any children by any of them but loved his stepsons too anyway and took care of them like any they were his own, providing the needed father figure.
His misdemeanors in his later adult life, both forced and unforced, led to bouts of depression, sad memories and low regard of self, taking a toll on his physical health, psychological well-being and emotional equilibrium. Fortunately for Trong, he was able to hold on to his Catholic background, however weak, with an inner prompting from God to move on with his life and not lose focus on his goal whichnis to become somebody that his father and family will be proud of.
Beyond all of these personal trials and tribulations which never seem to end, the horrors of the Vietnam war which displayed the brutality of the conquering regime, blood-thirsty violence and violation of freedom specially of women and children, people he respected and loved. And through it all Trong never wavered in his faith in the Father in heaven, the inner voice now growing louder and more definitive, reminding him of the Son coming down to His people, sharing of Himself to his chosen twelve and the disciple coming from all walks of life to follow Him.
Trong is the apostle of this age in the mold of the original twelve energized by Jesus himself aligning His mission to the will of the Father that they may go to the ends of the earth and proclaim the kingdom of God.
Trong, motivated by the inner voice of the Holy Spirit, has become a champion of the oppressed, the underpriveleged, the down-trodden, the hopeless and a symbol of the aspirations of the common people. A true son of Vietnam, he has become his country’s gift to the world to witness to the truth, that the real treasures of life are to be found not in the riches of the earth but in the human heart living peace, justice, kindness, humility, compassion and unconditional and love eternal, everything that is Jesus Christ who is The Way, The Truth and The Life.

OMG! This book is an amazing story. It is amazing to me that someone who went through everything he went through (especially as a small child) was able to regain his faith AND forgive. It was sometimes hard to read, but that’s what makes the story so incredible. Only a man truly blessed by God could get to this point of faith with everything that he went through, psychologically AND physically. I hope it’s made into a documentary or film. We need more stories like this.
Liezel Valenzuela –
This book is truly inspiring and deserving of a movie adaptation. Thank you, Van, for courageously sharing your life story, which reminds us that we serve a powerful God who guides our journey.

Trong,
The book is amazing! We have been a family friend for what seems like a lifetime. Didn’t realize all the dark experiences that you have had and when you didn’t, think God was in your life. He was walking right by your side to make sure you were safe. He had bigger plans for you. The book filled in the pieces that I didn’t know about your life. The pain that you had endured. God pulled you through with your willingness and faith. I am so proud to call you my friend and my brother. My parents loved you like their son. Glad God guided you on His path to become the man that you are today.
Best Wishes.

What a fascinating journey! I couldn’t put this book down. I think everyone hears that little voice of what is right and wrong, and the encouragement to persevere. But Trongs amazing resilience brought success after so many terrible setbacks. I truly appreciate how he came full circle to embrace his faith. And how Gary never gave up on finding his friend. A wonderful inspiring story !
Dave Deaner –
It is unbelievable all the challenges and turns of events that Trong encountered, and I can’t imagine growing up in a world with all the hardships and adversity that he had to endure throughout his life. Very inspirational and a must read.

After reading Of Good Courage, my family and I now know why there was such a special kindness and friendliness shown to us 30 years ago after meeting and spending time with Van Cao.
Behind the Mercedes Benz and the GQ attire, we saw a realness and authenticity in him that I now believe came from his roots in Vietnam as a little abused street kid.
If you need a picture of what God’s faithfulness and what never giving in looks like, then Of Good Courage is a must read.
